SUDAN ARCHIVES IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT

L.A based Sudan Archives is a self-taught violinist, singer and experimental beat-maker. Her eerie violin playing uses a mixture of plucked and bowed sounds, resembling African fiddle playing from Sudan, which she overlays with experimental electronics and R&B vocals. She has two EP's and one album out via her current label Stones Throw. Archives has released a new single, a cover of REM's 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' alongside a homemade music video. The tune sees double bass mirror the violin's plucked melody. Sudan Archives' verse lyrics are delivered with a nimble pace like a rap, whilst the her singing is intimate and thickly ornamented with harmony. With minimal use of instruments (only strings and vocals), the track is stripped-back compared to Archives usual sound which utilises electronics. The chorus lyrics comically declare "it's the end of the world as we know it", and maybe she's right. -Ellie Rose-Davies
